The Mathematics Department
This is the largest department in the school .It has an establishment of ten members of staff, four of whom are shared with other departments. It caters for both 'O' level and 'A' level students. All ' O' level students offer the subject. On the other hand, for 'A' level students, it is offered to those who obtain the required grade at 'O' level . At 'A' level the department handles both principal (P425) and subsidiary(S475) mathematics .Both of them have two papers.P425/2 is applied mathematics with numerical methods, mechanics and probability and statistics as course units . The department is trying to phase out subsidiary mathematics by encouraging students offering PCB to take principal mathematics as their forth principal subject we have managed doing that with the present senior five. For efficiency at 'A' level, the staff is organized such that the different course units are handled by different teachers in a given class ,hence creating some sort of specialization and breaking the monotony of going to the same class more than once on some days. The department has a problem of lack of up-to-date text books for both teachers and students .presently the text books in the departmental store are very few to go round the students and in some case lack the most recent approaches to problem solving. However ,some teachers have managed to secure some of the up-to-date books and this has gone along way to ease the teaching .students have also been advised to buy their own text books but some cannot afford them making it hard for them to practice problem solving .We hope that this problem will be over come in the near future.
