DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH. The Department is one of the largest academic departments in Busoga College Mwiri, manned by seven professional teachers. The Head of Department since 1997 is Mr. Jim J Oboth. The Department incorporates in it's academic programmes English Language, Literature and General paper. General paper is a comprehensive component of the Higher school Certificate studied by all students (in HSc) or a subsidiary level. The performance of all these subjects in public examination is steadily gaining momentum with a pass in English or over 93%(D1-C3). Apart from this, the Department of English runs a small library. The English Departments all over the world worth their salt, sho- uld have a library. In Mwiri, the Department library lends our specific tittles for remedial reading students who are left to acquire a certain level of proficiency in English. Other students too have access to the Department library. The advantage is that a student on reading a book may discuss with the teacher linguistic features or, thematic aspects of the book that he finds intriguing. Or, the teachers of the Department may guide the students in their choice of a book in accordance with (the students') abilities and frequency of borrowing. This does not usually happen in the general library. Finally the Department oversees the activities of affiliate clubs and societies such as Debate, Drama and writers' (Literary Society). The roles of these clubs are invaluable.
